TOWARDS THE EAST. TURCHIA, GEORGIA, ARMENIA, IRAN AND AFGHANISTAN | ANDRZEJ AND ELEONORA MELLER

• • • • • •

Andrzej Meller, a former war correspondent, has always dreamed of showing his wife Afghanistan, a dangerous and beautiful country like no other. Eleonora, a shamanic soul, lover of gongs and healing herbs, was not sure she was ready for such a dangerous journey. One day they get into an old Mercedes MB 100 and venture along the old Silk Road which in the 1960s and 70s was traveled by colorful buses filled with “flower children”, eager for adventure, love and experiences of all kinds….

Andrzej and Eleonora want to see the Panjshir Valley and Bamyan, a Buddhist shrine destroyed by Islamic extremists never conquered by foreign armies. They reunite with old friends whom Andrzej had met during his missions as a reporter in the war zone. But first they must overcome the dizzying twists and turns of the Armenian mountains and cross borders where every outsider is greeted with suspicion. Who will take them in and who will want to cheat them? Will the old shaman help Eleonora overcome her fear of heights? What will they do when they are abandoned by the Mercedes brakes on a road in the mountains? And most importantly: will they be able to get to Kabul before the Taliban get there?

Andrzej Meller (Warsaw, 1976) is a reporter, writer and war correspondent. He spent many years in Asia and also worked during armed conflicts in Georgia, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Libya. He is the author of four books of reportage “Mirage. Three Years in Asia” (2011), “Zenga, Zenga, or How the Rats Ate the King of Africa” (2012), “Hello, No Hyenas. The Vietnam You Don’t Know” (2016) and “Camper in Kabul” (2022).

Eleonora Meller, born in Russia, graduated from art high school and Herzen State University in St. Petersburg.
